IAHF LIST: Natural Health Issues Must be FOUGHT FOR - please do your part! With FDA threatening to harmonize us to emerging Codex standards which threaten to ban our access to vitamins and to truthful health information about them, we MUST pass legislation to send them a strong message NOT to interfere with our rights!

U.S. Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) reintroduced the "Consumer Health Free Speech Act," H.R. 1077, on March 11, 1999. The text of the bill can be viewed at http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c106:H.R.1077:

It already has six co-sponsors. They are Representative Peter A. DeFazio (D-OR),Bob Stump (R-AZ), John Hostettler (R-IN), Helen Chenowith (R-ID, and John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-TN), Merrill Cook (R-UT)Congressman Paul's remarks upon introduction of the bill are instructive and can be read at http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?r106:3:./temp/~r106tlcez7::

In the last Congress we had ten cosponsors for H.R. 2868, a similar bill to H.R. 1077, before it died at the close of the 105th Congress, in December, 1998. All congressional bills not enacted within a two-year congress have to be reintroduced.

Your help is needed. Make as many copies as you can of the "Please Cosponsor H.R. 1077" letter (follows). Have them signed by your family, friends, etc.... and mail them your U.S. Representatives. If you do not know who that is call your local library or call the US Capital Switchboard at 202-225-3121 and give them your zipcode, then ask them to transfer you. Ask to speak with the legislative assistant who addresses FDA issues, and educate them using the letter below, and also send it to them by email, fax, or regular mail. Address your letter to: The Honorable (fill in your Representative name); United States House of Representative, Washington, D.C. 20515

There is a better chance that Congressional Hearings will be held in the 105th Congress on H.R. 1077 than we had last year on H.R. 2868 in the 104th Congress.

Thank you for your help in our mutual efforts to preserve health freedoms in the United States.

LETTER:

PLEASE COSPONSOR H.R. 1077

Date:

The Honorable United States House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative:

I respectfully urge you to cosponsor H.R. 1077, introduced by Representative Ron Paul on 3/11/99. Cosponsors are: DeFazio, Stump, Hostettle, Chenowith and Duncan.

Because of a basic flaw in Federal Food and Drug law, safe foods and dietary supplements are now regulated as though they are dangerous drugs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when true claims are made for them. H.R. 1077 will correct that serious flaw by exempting foods and dietary supplements from the overly broad definition of a drug. The change will not weaken the FDA's authority to protect consumers from contaminated or unsafe foods.

Ron Paul sent you a letter dated March 8, 1999, that announced the FDA has just announced it will appeal the "Pearson v Shalala" decision. He said, "The Court found that the FDA's position that the American people need to be protected from truthful health claims made without the FDA's approval was 'frivolous'." FDA falsely claims that is precisely what Congress has intended, and so FDA is appealing. Recently they were denied their appeal, however the Supreme Court could take this up, and we need to send them a strong message!

Scientific studies have found that cranberry juice has possible therapeutic benefits to prevent (but not cure) urinary tract infections (cystitis); kill viruses and bacteria; and help prevent kidney stones. It should not be a federal crime for OCEAN SPRAY and its competitors to make, and document, these true health claims.

I deeply resent my tax dollars being spent by the FDA to keep me from knowing the truth about foods and dietary supplements. Cut FDA's 'frivolous' lawsuit budget.

PLEASE COSPONSOR H.R. 1077 and work diligently for its enactment. Support an FDA Oversight Hearing on CODEX. The FDA is trying to make an end run around current US law which forbids harmonization to emerging Codex Standards. FDA is trying to get around the law by putting a fraudulent document on the table at Codex. Passage of H.R.1077 would help send a strong message to the FDA not to harmonize our laws regarding vitamins and minerals to highly restrictive standards.

Sincerely Yours,
