IAHF List: You might wonder why I'm sending this report about the Seattle anti WTO protest, and how it ties in with your access to dietary supplements. As a participant in the Battle of Seattle, I saw a group of people who transcended such arbitrary labels as "right" and "left" as I demonstrated alongside people of all political persuasions in defense of America, in defense of our Constitution, we refused to accept any divisive labels as we rallied en masse against the enemy of the vitamin consumer: the multinational trash known as the Pharma Cartel.
I need your help people. Doesn't matter to me if you call yourself "Republican", "Democrat", "Socialist", "Communist", "Green", "Libertarian", "Anarchist", "Natural Law Party" or none of the above. If you are an American, (or from ANYWHERE ELSE in the world) and you are a VITAMIN CONSUMER you must do the following things if you want to MAINTAIN your access to vitamins and minerals and other dietary supplements within the therapeutic range (without having to have a doctors prescription):
1. Download the press release from the Council for Responsible Nutrition at http://www.crnusa.org/shellnr112000.html Titled U.S. and European Leaders Agree on Principles to Harmonize Dietary Supplement Regulations
2. Bear in mind that right now the EU is in the midst of a crisis. Unless consumers there raise total bloody hell in large enough numbers RIGHT NOW and for the next 5 months or so, the EU vitamin directive found at http://www.laleva.org/supplements/supplements.html will be FORCED upon all 15 EU countries, forcing them to walk in LOCKSTEP with Germany going into the next Codex meeting in Berlin in 2002.
3. Bear in mind that in the CRN press release, the multinational pharmaceutical companies that dominate CRN are blithely announcing to us consumers world wide, that henceforth, the multinational corporations intend to DICTATE to us regarding our access to high potency vitamins and minerals as well as ALL dietary supplements, and what we can learn about their healing effects. CRN tells us to contact Peter Heer (Peter.Heer@roche.com) of Roche about this, when Hoffman La Roche was fined a record $500,000,000 in 1999 by the US Department of Justice for engaging in illegal price fixing in the sale of vitamin raw materials,and is now trying to pull off an even LARGER crime, in BROAD DAYLIGHT out of SHEER ARROGANCE to destroy our access to high potency vitamins except by prescription. Whats in it for THEM? Simple: they stand to make MORE PROFIT, from LESS PRODUCT, they can DOWNSIZE, PLEASE INVESTORS, and simultaneously STOP the sale of vitamins from cutting NEARLY as much into the sale of their dangerous prescription pharmaceuticals. Hoffman La Roche is like the MAFIA. Their motto appears to be "Duh, In all tings in life, we benefit, know what I'm sayin?"
WHY YOU HAVEN'T HEARD ABOUT THIS SCAM BEFORE
You haven't heard about it due to pharmaceutically dominated controlled opposition groups that have PRETENDED to be for health freedom.
These groups include:
1. Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN)
2. National Nutritional Foods Assn (NNFA)
3. American Herbal Products Assn (AHPA)
4. Utah Natural Products Alliance (UNPA)
and so called "Citizens for Health"
These fake health freedom groups have DELIBERATELY been ACTIVELY MISINFORMING people on the Codex vitamin issue, and here is HOW:
Pharmaceutical interests have gotten control of the vitamin trade associations via paying far more in membership dues, as well as for the largest (most expensive) boothes at the vitamin trade shows. In this fashion, they have been dominating the policies of the trade associations: controlling the attorneys and lobbyists, controlling the PR apparatus of the trade associations in such a way as to keep the rank and file membeship in the dark about what is going on, as the mid to small sized companies are being deliberately LED TO THE CLIFF.
DSHEA was not a great victory, it was an ILLUSION: Here is WHY:
DSHEA gave FDA a HUGE WEAPON that they haven't yet UNLOADED on us, but which they are clearly on the VERGE of unloading on us with.
THE WEAPON DSHEA HANDED FDA - GMPs
FDA is now in the process of trying to harmonize GMP standards for vitamins with the very STRICT GMPs that they're developing NOW in the EU, right at the exact moment that all 15 EU countries are on the verge of being harmonized via the EU vitamin directive at http://www.laleva.org/supplements/supplements.html which WILL FORCE all 15 EU nations to walk in LOCKSTEP with Germany. This will happen within the next 5 months unless massive grass roots opposition occurrs throughout the EU RIGHT NOW, but its NOT HAPPENING due to GROSS IGNORANCE throughout the EU regarding the healing properties of vitamins which are not NEARLY As widely used in the EU as in the USA.
So... the multinational pharma cartel which dominates CRN, NNFA, AHPA, UNPA, and CFH has kept Congressman Burton from holding a Congressional Oversight Hearing on the Codex vitamin issue.
John Hammell of International Advocates for Health Freedom was kicked off the US Codex Delegation as a whistleblower last June, and we WILL BE SHAFTED unless you help do the following en masse and alert MORE PEOPLE:
1) Call Senator Hatch's office (reach any member of congress via 202-225-3121) and ask to be transferred to Bruce Artim on the Senate Judiciary Commitee.
2.) Tell Bruce to go to http://www.crnusa.org/ and to download the press release about the TABD decision to harmonize vitamin regs between the EU and US.
3) Tell Bruce that you insist that Senator Hatch immediately get in touch with JB Cordaro of CRN about this and that he discuss the following facts with him:
A) The American people are armed to the teeth and prepared to kill if necessary to defend their access to vitamins and minerals.
B) He, Senator Hatch, fears for his life in the event that consumers were to lose their access to high potency vitamins and minerals due to harmonization to the EU.
C) IAHF has outlined all the specifics of this situation beyond any shadow of doubt, and there is an immediate need to work with Congressman Ron Paul on a MAJOR PUSH for passage of the American Sovereignty Restoration Act which would pull us entirely out of the WTO and UN as our ONLY means of protection in the face of what is happening.
D) The notion that 19 USC 3512(a)(1) is anything more than a PAPER TIGER in terms of alleged "protection" against the harmonization of our domestic laws to international standards has been SERIOUSLY called into question by an article titled "Dispute Settlement" by Jeanne Grimmett of the Congressional Research Service which documents several instances in which our laws have been indirectly forced, under threat of trade sanctions, to be harmonized to international standards.
E) Due to this sort of thing, there were MASSIVE protests against the WTO in Seattle last year as can be plainly seen at http://www.louisbeam.com/seattle.htm
QUESTION: Wouldn't it behoove Senator Hatch to communicate about the dire need for Codex Oversight Hearings on the Vitamin Issue in both the House and Senate?
QUESTION: Shouldn't Senator Hatch sponsor a Senate Companion Bill to Ron Paul's American Sovereignty Restoration Act?
QUESTION: Shouldn't Congressman Burton honor the promise he made over two years ago to hold an Oversight Hearing on the Codex Vitamin Issue? (He is listening to CRN, NNFA, and CfH despite the fact that the conflict of interest has been pointed out to him until we're blue in the FACE.)
QUESTION: Shouldn't all vitamin consumers call their Senators and Congressmen about this at 202-225-3121 and also Senator Hatch and Congressman Burton?
QUESTION: Since they've just ignored us on this year after year, shouldn't we arm ourselves to the TEETH while we STILL CAN?
QUESTION: Shouldn't every American join Gun Owners of America to thwart the onslaught of anti gun legislation as the multinationals and ruling elite attempt to DISARM US so that we can't FIGHT BACK???
QUESTION: Shouldn't all vitamin companies that currently belong to NNFA QUIT EN MASSE and pitch their support INSTEAD behind the ONE (1) organization in America that has been TIRELESSLY fighting in their behalf, enduring libel, death threats, and radically undeserved BAD MOUTHING in a totally UNSELFISH effort to defend their FREEDOM???
QUESTION: Shouldn't every vitamin company in America help the health freedom fighters of EUROPE to STOP the current effort to force harmonization to GERMANY inside the EU??? Shouldn't an effort be made to help IAHF reach out to the people of Europe??
How many people on the IAHF list give a DAMN about their access?

Below is information on two reports released in connection with the one year anniversary of the Seattle-WTO protests.
Dozens of events were organized throughout the US and around the world to celebrate the historic victory of Seattle, and to highlight current campaigns against the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) in the WTO, the negotiations of a "NAFTA for the Americas" (FTAA), campaigns to boycott World Bank Bonds to name a few. In Washington DC, the Seattle coalition (including the United Steelworkers of America, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Friends of the Earth, National Family Farm Coalition, the Humane Society U.S., and Public Citizen) threw a big reception and organized a screening of the Seattle documentary "Trade Off" with standing room only. In Seattle there were teach-ins and street actions throughout the weekend, and there were actions planned in New York, North Carolina and Philadelphia.
Around the world, there were anti-globalization caravans going through India, Bangladesh and Philippines, the launch of the Australian campaign against GATS, as well as the release of a GATS report in the UK, large teach-ins in Denmark, Canada, UK and Netherlands, actions in Switzerland, press conferences in France and Malaysia to mention some (if there were events organized in your country and city, please e-mail mstrand@citizen.org with the information so that it can be included in the list of Seattle-WTO events)

One Year After Seattle: Globalization Revisited
A new report from the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) analyzes the changes in policy and the debate over globalization since the collapse of the World Trade Organization's negotiations last year.
The report, "One Year After Seattle: Globalization Revisited," is available on the web at http://www.cepr.net/ and by request from CEPR. November 30 marks one year since the Millennium Round of the World Trade Organization (WTO) collapsed under a cloud of tear gas. The WTO has yet to set a date for the resumption of talks, and the future course of the organization is in doubt.
More broadly, the post-Seattle era has been host to a new and different debate over globalization. Even the staunchest proponents of increasing international trade and investment have conceded that the interests of the poor, the environment, and working people will not automatically be advanced by the expansion of global markets.
"The debate over globalization has expanded considerably since Seattle," stated Dr. Mark Weisbrot, Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR). "But there has been little in the way of substantive policy changes or institutional reform. The WTO has not changed its pre-Seattle agenda. The IMF and the World Bank are still dragging their feet on debt relief for the world's poorest countries, and seem to have learned little from their mistakes in Asia, Russia, and Latin America."

On Anniversary of Seattle Protests, IPS Releases "Student Voices One Year After Seattle," -- A Written Documentary on Student Activism in the Movement for Social and Economic Justice
On the first anniversary of the mass protests in Seattle against the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Institute for Policy Studies is releasing a written documentary that presents the opinions and reflections of student activists engaged in the growing movement against corporate globalization, and for social and economic justice.
On November 30, 1999, thousands of students joined with trade unionists, environmentalists and others in protests which stopped the WTO's plans to launch a new round of trade negotiations and fueled an upsurge of student and youth activism.
The written documentary, "Student Voices One Year After Seattle," records how these students are working to continue to build on the momentum of the Battle in Seattle and to meet the challenges they will face in the years to come, particularly in building a movement that is cohesive as well as racially and socioeconomically inclusive.
The documentary's author, Bhumika Muchhala, a recent college graduate who demonstrated at Seattle, conducted interviews with 50 students and recent graduates from 38 universities across the country. "The students I've interviewed create an introspective discourse about the real issues of awareness and growth, society and self, action and change," says Muchhala.
The 40 page written documentary presents quotes and narrations from a diverse range of students as well as recent graduates on:
- how they became politicized and what continues to motivate them,
- their opinions on what the collective vision encompasses,
- their most empowering experiences at protests and on campus,
- what the issues surrounding coalition building across race and socioeconomic divides are and what constructive steps they have taken to address the divides, as well as
- their plans for the future and how they want to contribute to the growing movement in the long run
